Day 24 of 30 Day Challenge – Traffic: Go or No Go

Ed Dale started with Day 24 training of the 30 Day Challenge, describing the impact of rank on traffic. The Gtrends data on searches/day is based on the #1 position in Google. If you’re not in the number one spot, then there is a drop off. If GTrends suggests that you’re going to get 100 visitors a day in position #1, then you’re going to get about 30 visitors in position #2, and 12-15 in position #3. Once you’re in positions #4 – #10, traffic will tail off. Traffic won’t drop to 0, but we’re talking about a couple of searches per day at most. The credibility and import of this data is represented in a post on the Red Cardinal blog which displays the % share of clickthroughs for the top 10 search engine results based on data accidentally released by AOL.

Ed Dale’s focus on Day 23 of the 30 Day Challenge was writing “slippery” content. The goal being for people to come to your site, read the article and then click the affiliate link. The difference between the number of people coming to your landing page, and then going from your site to the affiliate sales page is your slipperiness. The conversion rate is the number of people who arrive at the affiliate sales page (after leaving your quality content) compared to the number of people who buy. If you get 1 in 200 then you’re doing well.

Day 20 of the 30 Day Challenge focused on ethical social bookmarking. At the outset, Ed Dale established that social bookmarking and social posting are analogous to a bank account. When you bookmark someone else’s content (which should be something you genuinely like) you are making a deposit. Then, when you bookmark your own content, you make a withdrawal. And there’s nothing wrong with bookmarking your own content. Many professional bloggers socially bookmark their articles.

Days 18 & 19 of the 30 Day Challenge were catchup days. However, Ed Dale, Rob Somerville and Dan Raines joined for a call to discuss Google ranking. It has been their experience that, once launched, sites rank within 24 hours to a week. For the 30 Day Challenge, 72 hours was the official expected ranking time.

Day 16 of the 30 Day Challenge outlined use of Tumblr as a content platform. Next, the use of Web 2.0 properties such as Netscape was discussed as a tool to get attention or drive traffic to a site. Once the Web 2.0 properties have been initiated, the countdown to ranking in Google begins. For most sites, it will take a day or two, or even a week before it ranks in Google. If a site does not rank by Day 20, Ed Dale promises to add a little secret. Action items for the day included:

Day 15 of 30 Day Challenge – The WHY of Traffic

At Day 15 of the 30 Day Challenge we’ve: 1) conducted market research, 2) identified niche keywords that should be able to compete, and 3) picked an affiliate program for testing. Day 15’s lesson discussed how to generate traffic. Using Web 2.0 properties, we will have the ability to generate enough traffic to determine if our keywords are going to work or not.
